With British summer time having officially ended but the weather now hotting up, we are in the bizarre position where summer has finished, the weather is hot - and the best bit - the fashion world is looking ahead at what us stylish gents will want to be wearing next summer. Got that?

Fashion weeks across Europe have just closed and one of our favourite designers, Vivienne Westwood, showed a strong menswear collection for SS12 – inspired by London’s Olympics, set to take the capital by storm next year - and so her men’s fashion show’s dominant theme. There were of course some typically catwalk-only, show-stopping ‘Westwood moments’ which not every one of us will pull off, but what’s great about Vivienne Westwood is her understanding of how the British gent likes to dress: dapper, smart and often a little bit eccentric, daring to be different from the crowd.

Everyone wears Westwood in their own way, which is what makes her designs even more universally appealing and enduring. Those of us in the North like to dress it up with smart 3-button collar shirts (got to be worn with the skull & crossbone cufflinks) and polos and a smart pair of dark rinse jeans (our favourite has to be those jeans by Dior Homme who also just showed a strong collection at Paris Fashion Week) and a pair of brogues by the likes of Paul Smith, but Londoners like a washed out, more relaxed approach to their Westwood, typically choosing the designer’s draped knitwear and the her signature ‘drop crotch’ trousers. It’s about mixing it up and making sure the look is right for you.

Whatever your style though, formal and tailoring-inspired or relaxed and casual looking, one of the strongest themes to emerge across the menswear design shows at all three major cities, London Fashion Week as well as those held in Milan and Paris a few weeks ago, is that the 'man-bag' is now firmly something the major fashion houses believe we should be wearing.

Our advice? Ignore the major fashion houses and the silly term 'man bag' (which would probably put any sane man off from wanting one).... But. BUT. Look, let's be frank there is only so much rubbish we can cram into our pockets, before people start to look away with embarrassment when you walk into the room. So, let's be grown up about it, you're going to need to need a bag at some stage. Which just happens to made for a man.

What the hell. Let's just call it a man-bag.

It's something we talked about on our blog a few months back, when we asked our readers 'are you man enough to wear a man bag?'. Our readers contacted us to tell us a resounding 'yes', and that in many instances they owned bags more expensive than their better halves! Well, it is the 21st century.

Anyway, this brings us back to Fashion Week - Vivienne Westwood showed her menswear collection with her range of new men's bags, two of which KJ Beckett have in stock.

Both are leather, and both are extremely good quality as you'd expect from this brand. The black leather version is sleek and will go well with a sharp suit, and has the logo subtly placed in the bottom corner so will certainly be suitable for the office.

The brown version is a bit more rugged, due to it's distressed leather finish and will look smart with a pair of old jeans and maybe a Belstaff jacket when going for a stroll around the park on Sunday morning.

No, I've never worn a shoulder bag for a trip to the park on a Sunday morning either, but this seems like the perfect opportunity to start, surely?

Become your own style icon

'Style icon', like so many expressions these days, is a phrase which is completely overused in our opinion.

If you are a footballer, you are hailed as a 'style icon'.
If you happen to marry a footballer, you are a 'style icon'.
If you are an actor, you are a 'style icon'.

To be honest, it's a phrase we avoid at MilanStyle.

And while there are certainly a number of footballers, actors and others in the media spotlight who know how to pull a sharp outfit together (or let's be honest, have a stylist do it for them) money is not necessarily the only way to being stylish. And one thing we always try to convey to our readers at MilanStyle.co.uk is that you must in fact become your own style icon.

At MilanStyle.co.uk we celebrated our favourite dressers in one of our most popular articles on 'Timeless Style' for men.

Interestingly, many of the gentlemen we picked for our list had completely different looks and came from different backgrounds, from Motown to Buckingham Palace. Importantly though, all those on our list dressed true to their own personal style, something which they had each developed over the years.

But, so too did they all know the rules to completing an outfit.

While we were recently reviewing the article, we noticed that in all the pictures of the gentlemen we'd picked, they were wearing what we in England call handkerchiefs and what Americans call 'pocket squares'. (And what Europeans call 'pochettes' since you asked). Was this what made them look so smart?

A standard accessory worn with all jackets until the 70s, many men today however often fear the wearing of a handkerchief in the breast pocket of their favourite suit. The man from a working class background fears it will make him look 'too posh'. The successful businessman fears it will make him look out of touch or 'elitist'.

Forget these silly fears and give one a go. Our experience when wearing one is that people will generally really appreciate it, frequently coming up to you and giving you compliments on how smart you look. And who doesn't like to receive a compliment?

A silk handkerchief really does separate the men from the boys in our opinion.

If you're still dressing out of fear of what other people might say about your outfit, you may not be mature enough to pull off a handkerchief anyway!

If you are ready to give handkerchiefs a go though, it may be best to start with something simple and plain. You can't just go wrong with a luxurious white cotton 'kerchief by one of our favourite brands Derek Rose with whatever jacket colour you are wearing.
If you're a little more experienced with handkerchiefs, you can afford to be a little bolder. Ralph Lauren, for example, seems to be the American ambassador for the 'pocket square'. Something we've seen a lot of in the look-books we get sent for his labels like Polo Ralph Lauren and Ralph Lauren Purple Label is a smart navy blazer or rustic tweed jacket (which we British are of course very familiar with wearing) teamed with a beautiful, patterned silk handkerchief to really complete the look.

KJ Beckett are stocking the range of artisan handkerchiefs by the Soho (London) based designers 'Penrose London' in modern paisleys, which will work a treat with a navy or grey suit jacket. (Black jackets in our opinion can not tolerate so much colour, best to stick to a plan white cotton/linen or red silk handkerchief only).

There are many guides and illustrations on how to fold a handkerchief perfectly. We tend to just fold it in half so it forms a triangle and just shove it into the pocket using your middle fingers, so that it generally looks OK, don't worry so much about getting it 'perfect' - it's enough that you're confident enough to wear one. Once it's in, you'll be most stylish man in the room, and, dare we say it, maybe even your office's own Style Icon?

Groom’s accessories should all be about making a statement but in an understated yet stylish manner. At the end of the day the last thing any groom wants to do is to out shine the Bride!

However the groom deserves the finer things in life especially on his wedding day and good accessories are the key.

Working on the basis of the having chosen your suit style and colour; accessories should be the finishing touch and accent to the outfit. A combination of the finish to the grooms outfit, but also complimenting and highlighting the bride as well as groomsmen and brides maids. This can be achieved in a number of ways with the key trends being colour, pattern and details.

Colour

Bold blocks colours picking up the wedding theme or bringing the best out in the suit. Blues, greys as standard but dare to wear pink in summer, with purples and ruby reds good statements for autumn tones.

Pattern

Co-ordinated patterns across your accessories. Having a checker, stripe and dot classics in the tie, pocket hank and socks really pulls it all together.

Details

Accessories is all about the details even if you just notice it but other people will for sure.

The tie, no too wide, not too thin. 7cm is a good blade width. Cufflinks... think more modern classic, no bright and blingy. You wan to wear them again and remember your big day. A pocket hank is a must. Pouchette style as preference with a bit more style but even folded pocket square with a dash of colour or pattern.

Other key finishing details that are key right now are the tie pin or tie clips. Not only looks sharp but also means you don’t have to worry about your tie position all day. Black onyx, mother of pearl or plain with subtle pattern always work best.

The combination of strong colour, subtle pattern and sharp detailing is the key. Try mix and matching these factors to look less staid or drab wedding formula. Think style not peacock or dandy!

‘It’s all in the details’.

It’s a saying we’ve all heard and we’ve probably even said a few times ourselves, but strangely, most gents often fall down on the little details when it comes down to putting together an outfit for a smart evening out, or even just to smarten up their office attire.

It’s often the case that men will spend a lot of money on a shirt or pair of jeans for an evening out, forgetting that an outfit does not start and end with your top and bottoms. There is absolutely no exception to this rule, so that means your (polished) shoes have got to look just as sharp and just as fresh as your new shirt. And so have your accessories.

Many often scrimp and try to ‘save money’ on their socks, underwear and ties, thinking that because the rest of their outfit looks good, they’ll ‘get away’ with a bobbly old pair of socks and a tie you got for Christmas a few years ago from your Nan. The truth is, the opposite tends to happen. Your tired old socks, or your cheap tie pulls down the rest of your outfit and leaves people with an impression that you’re not sure how to pull together a smart outfit. Whereas if you’d spend a little more to perfect these little details and highlight your own individual sense of style, you’d seriously elevate your look (and what people think of how you dress).

If you’re a fan of Vivienne Westwood menswear for example, there’s just no point wearing a brand new crisp Vivienne Westwood shirt and then letting it down with bog-standard Christmas cracker cufflinks. Invest in some of the designer’s iconic ‘skull’ cufflinks in gunmetal grey (we really love these at MilanStyle.co.uk) – needless to say they complete any Westwood outfit and also are actually very adaptable – adding a real touch of personality to your office shirt too. Wear them with confidence.

Next, socks

We’ve all done it. You think that because you’re wearing some beautiful Gucci loafers, or Oliver Sweeney boots or maybe even some Tricker’s brogues that you’ll be able to get away with some cheap Primark socks that you got as a gift, right? Wrong.

Seriously if you’ve taken the leap to wearing proper men’s shoes, spend the extra tenner you’d normally spend on socks and go for some by the likes of Pantherella, still made in England in fine woollens, and still looking as good with a well-made pair of shoes just as they ever did.

Scarves

Anyone who reads our blog will know how in awe we are of the John Smedley brand after we recently visited their factory.

Again, don't try to cut corners and making sure always you look sharp from head to toe. You just can’t beat a John Smedley jumper and after we tried the scarves in subtle, very ‘English’ designs, we realised it will be hard to beat a John Smedley scarf too. Remember then gents, when you buy cheap accessories, you’re really only fooling yourself into thinking you can ‘get away with it’. Spend that little bit extra than you perhaps normally would and enjoy the confidence in wearing a complete, quality outfit from head to toe – it’s all in the details after all.

Pocket Squares – How to Fold a Pocket Square

Before we get started on how to fold a pocket square, perhaps we should just clarify what a pocket square actually is. It is a handkerchief, but not the same as the hanky you stuff in your pocket on your suit. It is a small, sometimes dressy and well folded (more of that in a bit) handkerchief that sits in the top left breast pocket of a jacket. This accessory accompanies a smart suit to add authority to a sharp look by showing attention to detail.

Straight Fold:
If we start with the simplest folds; the straight fold.
1. Simply lay out the pocket square,
2. Bring the left to the right side then bottom to the top not quite the whole way
3. Finally fold the hankerchief in thirds.
This is a good starter look but isn’t the sharpest as it simply shows a straight line of handkerchief peeking out over the top.

One Corner Fold:
A sharper look for pocket squares is the one corner fold, where just a peak of fabric shows;

1. Lay out your pocket square with one corner facing up and one facing down.
2. Form a triangle by bringing the bottom point to the top one.
3. Next, take the left corner to the right corner and the right corner.
4. If you have done this correctly then you should now have a rectangle with a little point on top.
5. Now just fold the bottom to the top, but not all the way (as with the straight fold) and simply place in your suit pocket, adjusting to show the right amount of fabric.

These are just two different ways of pocket square folding but there are many more. Get started with these...

Frank Sinatra Fashion: Frank Sinatra A Classic Style Icon

Many a fashion writer has paid homage to Frank Sinatra style, and we here also wish to celebrate ‘Ol’ blue eyes’ flair for fashion. However, we will be taking a slightly different slant on Sinatra the style icon and discussing ways in which a gent can take inspiration from the Frank Sinatra look by taking certain pieces to create a suave way of dressing that is relevant for today’s man you guys!

Always beautifully turned out, Sinatra favoured tuxedos and sharp accessories. Extolling the virtues of being immaculate, Sinatra’s attention to detail is something which most men can learn from. Shoes polished to perfection, a half inch of shirt showing- no more, no less and trousers sitting at the exact length were all are part of the Frank Sinatra look.

Whilst a bespoke suit may be out of the reaches of most of us, accessories are a little easier to come by, which is very handy as Frank Sinatra fashion was all about smart, unfussy accessories. Sinatra often sported a white linen pocket square, which are very easy to come by and if you check out our blog from a couple of weeks back, you will even find an article telling you exactly how you might want to fold your pocket hanky!

For neck attire, Sinatra favoured bow ties or simple narrow silk ties. KJ Beckett’s own skinny silk ties will hit the mark spot on, especially if worn with a slim fit black or dark grey suit. The style king himself was a fan of black, especially after dark but you can go for navy or purple and still channel the dapper Frank Sinatra look.

Gold cufflinks were one accessory that Sinatra was rarely seen without in his suit. A gold cufflink is not often seen these days, with gents often preferring to wear silver or platinum, yet there is a genuine old fashioned class in wearing a gold cufflink. Wedding Style for Men: Wedding Accessories and Wedding Attire – Getting it right!

Men’s wedding style can be tricky to get right. Even if you are part of the wedding party and have an outfit all ready decided for you, it can still go horribly wrong. Unfortunately though, you don’t really get much say if you are a groomsman! It’s like it (salmon silk tie and matching handkerchief anyone) or errr, pretend to like it – because you’ll be wearing it all day!

For those of you fortunate enough to be picking your outfit, keep reading. We have broken down the different suits, styles and accessories that you might like to consider for your men’s wedding attire.

For a spring or summer wedding, keep it light in colour and in material. A well fitting light grey suit will always look classic and if you add a tailored waistcoat, this will look razor sharp. Soften with a light coloured shirt, spring colours like lilac and powder blue will always look gorgeous. If you are brave, try a linen or cotton suit – just be wary of very pale or white suits; a wedding isn’t the time to channel Miami Vice.

Men’s wedding accessories are also worth considering with your wedding outfit. For the warmer months, lovely soft toned ties and matching handkerchiefs sit well with this type of outfit and will add something of a debonair air. Amanda Christensen have luxury paisley hankerchiefs with matching ties which add a grown up air to an already dapper look.

For a more formal or evening wedding, you may consider a tuxedo. If this is the case, then select a really gorgeous and expensive looking bow tie to stand you apart from the crowd. Robert Charles design woven silk bow ties in either a block shade or if you are feeling brave, with a rose pattern – which can actually look surprisingly modern if worn with a properly fitted suit. The other neck attire that you might consider is a cravat; just be careful not to get confused with the wedding party or you’ll be helping Great Aunty May around all night!

With an autumn or winter wedding, you can go for a darker suit and make the most of the richer colours and textures around at this time of year in both attire and wedding accessories. Go for gold and choose a classic and stylish cufflink; Denisonboston offer a really sophisticated array that will look really elegant against a darker suit.

One rule that should always be followed though; matching with your partner (unless you are the groom of course) is a big no no. Do not let your other half persuade you of this. It is not a good look.

My favourite in the ties has to be ‘The Garden Delight’ tie in amazing purples and silver highlights, but there are so many to pick from that if I could buy them all – I probably would!

This seasons cufflinks raise Duchamp London accessories to a whole new bar, they are simply amazing. Using crystals to gorgeous effect, these are cufflinks like no others on the market. Their ‘Corsage crystal cufflink’ is beautiful, yet with all the use of feminine patterns and colours still retains a masculine edge. Team with one of their gorgeous silk ties (I suggest ‘Elysian fields’, so so lovely) and you will be the picture of sartorial elegance.

Winter Accessories: How to Stay Warm and Stylish This Winter

Winter accessories for men are still very much on the male fashion agenda. As much as the fashion world would have us believe it’s time for spring with the unveiling of new spring/summer collections on their catwalks and in the shops. It is in fact still winter and still rather painful to be outside sans decent winter accessories.
Winter accessories are a definite for this time of year, and as we are set for quite a few more weeks of coldness then it’s time to look at how to wear accessories to stay warm and stylish this winter. Celebrities like David Beckham, Robert Pattinson and Jake Gyllenhaal show just how good you can look in on trend and stylish men’s winter accessories. The key to this is to avoid bulking up too much.

Choose a lovely slim line scarf in a neutral wintery shade of plum, grey or navy. Cashmere, merino or fine wool are the warmest and most luxe fabrics. Bear this in mind if you are thinking of buying a scarf that needs to do for both relaxed weekends and work suits. 1. The Parisian Knot
The loop and knot or as it is officially known, The Parisian knot is the most popular and most classic way to wear a scarf. Celebrities such as David Beckham are often seen tying scarves in this way. Fold the scarf in half, place around the neck and simply pull the ends through to create a large knot on or below the neck. Ends can be tucked in if extra chilly but a better look is to let the ends drape over the coat. A masculine, clean and elegant look.

2. The Once Around Knot
The once around knot is another simple yet stylish way to wear a scarf. Think Jude Law around Notting Hill. If you are just after a little comfort, then simply throw your scarf around your neck with one end slightly longer, tie a knot using the longer side and away your go. Leading men’s fashion magazine GQ recently ran a piece on their current 20 favourite cufflinks. Although we did not totally agree with their choices we were pleased to carry a number of cufflinks mentioned. Brands mentioned in the KJ Beckett family include Sonia Spencer, Simon Carter, Tateossian and others.

Truthfully I think one could create a better top 20 list. The GQ list includes a lot of well known designers such as Gucci, Cartier and Hackett. Although the mentioned are fantastic brands and we are massive fans of what they do, we would argue that they are not renowned cufflink designers. Products from cufflinks specialists like Robert Charles, Tyler & Tyler, Denisonboston, Aston Brown, Murray Ward, Square Mile and a number of others would be included in our list.

I am sure like us many of you are crazy about Mad Men, the American TV show that has taken the states, the UK and the world by storm.

Dr. Daniel Faraday (played by Saving Private Ryan actor Jeremy Davies) was a physicist and professor who parachuted into ABC's Lost from a helicopter, and with him he brought the distinctive look featuring a skinny tie.

How did Daniel Faraday get his look? Well, when Davies first met Lost's costume designer Roland Sanchez, he was wearing a thin black tie. Sanchez merged this "cool, edgy look" with his idea for the character's clothes: a "nerdy" loosely woven dress shirt from J.Crew.

The merger of the two looks created the cool look that became a favourite with the fans of Lost and Daniel Faraday.

Our recently employed KJ Beckett IT guy, Joseph, gave me inspiration for this blog post! He has a plain wallet that he purchased before joining KJ Beckett. Recently the bachelor purchased the Black Ted Baker Zuben wallet for his many dates and special occasions. He also purchased a canvas billabong wallet for the beach. Joseph argues that a man needs multiple wallets to cater for all occasions!

Joseph’s thinking seems genius to me. I need to decide which wallet out of the many we carry will be my date wallet!?!?

The History of David Beckham's Hair: Part 2

Welcome back to MFB for the second part in the exciting life of David Beckham's hair.

Following his big money move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in June 2003, for the tidy sum of £24.5million, Beckham added this long blonde number to the ‘Galacticos’ of Madrid.
Looking more like Goldilocks who was missing 3 bears (But what about Ronaldo??!) than a footballing Super Star, Becks new hairstyle certainly captivated his form at the time, scoring on his debut in the Spanish Super Cup.

With his new Madrid lifestyle well under way, David didn’t change his hairstyle for a few months, choosing to continue to grow the ‘Goldilocks’ style further, creating a dramatic longer look, which can be seen being sported in a ponytail in the image to the side.

This longer, glamorous look was accustomed to the Hollywood lifestyle the Beckham’s craved and this style was the start of their journey of ‘cracking’ the States.

Clearly tired of the maintenance involved in long hair, Beck’s chose to have a large portion of it cut off and reverted back to a shorter, spiked look which was tinted blonde at the tips.

Still a Real Madrid legend in the making, this new look is still a hit with the fans, and adds to the earning power of the ‘Beckham Brand’ to the Madrid giants.

Onwards and upwards, or should I say longer?

Becks grows his latest ‘do’ slightly longer, and goes for the longer sided look while still at Real Madrid, but also allowing the blonde tints we know Beckham for, to grow out making the then England captain seem more intellectual.

Trimmed at the sides and left longer at the front, Becks grows this shorter ‘quiff’ in preparation for the World Cup Finals 2006 in Germany.
At a time when the then England captains form was under scrutiny, this hairstyle certainly keeps up his form in the hair stakes adding to Beckham mania that swept the country before the competition.

At a time when Beckham was recapturing the form that Real Madrid take notice, having first battled his way back into the Galactico line-up of the Madrid giants, Becks went for one of his most striking looks ever, Platinum Blonde, for the completion of a set of photographs with his wife Victoria for top photographer Stephen Klein.

Sporting a pair of aviators, Becks stepped off the plane in Madrid more accustomed to a Hollywood film star, especially after his contract signing with Los Angeles Galaxy after contract talks with Real Madrid broke down early in the 2006/2007 Spanish season.

The Platinum look even grabbed the attention of his team-mates who reportedly nicknamed Becks ‘Marilyn’ after Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe.

With his new nickname rife among his team-mates, Becks decided to take his hair back to the past with a closer, shorter look to see out his time in the Spanish capital.

With this new (or should I say old?) style, still complete with Platinum Blonde, Becks pretty much single handily guided Real Madrid to their first Spanish title in 4 years, a first for Beckham since his move in 2003 from Manchester United, while also recapturing his England place after Steve McClaren saw the error of his way.

With this Hollywood style under his belt, Becks moves to LA Galaxy on a free transfer making his debut against Chelsea at the end of July 2007, signalling the start of Beckhams transition to the United States of America and a new chapter in his History.

Storage Tips: So easy, even we can do it Gents.

So you’ve bought the latest designer threads, and accessories and you’re looking the business, but to continue looking that way, you really have to store them properly to keep them, and you looking at your best.

This is an area where a lot of men drastically fail, and with a bit of help, those expensive items can last for years if properly stored away in the off-season.

To start off, there are three important areas to remember when storing clothes: Clean, Protect and Organise.

Clean

Quite a simple thing to remember to do before you store your clothes away eh? Wrong.
So many men forget to do this before they put them into storage, it’s unreal.

Clothes are extremely susceptible to bugs and mites, especially when dirty.
Remember, just because not all stains are visible, doesn’t mean they’re not there to haunt you when you pull your favourite cashmere sweater out of storage a few months later, only to find out its ruined, making it a very costly mistake to make.

Best bet is to wash them, or better still, dry-clean them before storage, even if you think they don’t need it.

Protect

So you’ve taken the first step to making sure your garments are clean as a whistle before storage, but it doesn’t stop there. Even clean garments need protection, and this comes in the form of wood.
Yep, you read it correctly, wood.

The most commonly effective form of wood to use to protect garments during storage is Cedar.

Cedar provides a fresh scent which that not only repels bugs and mites, but also absorbs abrasive odours from your laundry basket or that over-used gym bag.

Cedar products are available in several forms for protecting your clothes, which include hang-ups for closets, blocks for drawers and containers and cedar hangers which can be used for coats and suits.

They’re available from any good department store near you and the rubbish ones too.

Second in the laws of protection is the location of the storage.

Protection is best carried out in dark, cool, dry and well ventilated places.
Without these 4 conditions, clothes can become faded, damaged, mouldy, and musty, much like the smell associated with old people.

So, just be strategic in storing your garments in the proper places and with the proper protection to guarantee their longevity.

Organise

The final key to storing your clothes in the off-season is proper organisation, taking your clean clothes and your protective elements and applying them together.

Organisation doesn’t just mainstream your wardrobe; it also adds extra protection by storing similar garments together.

For example, the storage of hanging items in natural cotton garment bags allows you to store similar items in the same area, but it also blocks light and provides a breathable barrier for clothes to maintain them in a safe, clean and easy to locate environment.

Don’t forget about storage boxes though, as several of these add extra order and flexibility in storing items in locations such as under the bed and can also add structure to your wardrobe.

Just remember, organisation can add simplicity to life, so why not add it to your wardrobe?

Just taking into account the 3 simple steps of clean, protect and organise allows you to play the game of fashion more successfully, especially as you’ll now stand out from the crowd in your well cared for garments, making the little time and effort put into the process a lot more rewarding.

The History of David Beckham's Hair: Part 1

MFB thought it was about time to look at the UK's most influential men's fashion icon in recent times ... David Beckham, and in particular David Beckham's hairstyles!

David Beckham changes his hairstyle more often than he changes his underwear! Indeed, since meeting the fashion conscious Victoria Adams (now his wife, Victoria Beckham), who has clearly molded his persona, David Beckham's hairstyle has been one of the most talked about things in the history of celebrity fashion.

We start off in the early days of David’s career, fresh out of the youth academy at Manchester United with this mainly un-styled, plain and simple look.
This was in keeping with the non-flash lifestyle Sir Alex Ferguson embedded into his upcoming youth team players, but little did he know this was the start of an extremely media-fuelled career.

As David’s career takes off due to often brilliant displays on the wing for Manchester United, his hairstyle begins to develop into a more slicker look as he discovers the joys of hair gel, prompting a deal with Brylcreem which increased their sales by 50%.

Flash back to the 1995/1996 English Premier League season, and to David Beckham’s famous goal scored from the half way line over a helpless Neil Sullivan in goal for Wimbledon.

This is the point where David Beckham’s career really took off as he was sprung into the media spotlight for showcasing his footballing talent, and as a result of this, his hair undertook a dramatic change with the inclusion of blonde highlights: the mark of an upcoming Superstar.

David Beckham shocked the nation with his next style taking him from media sweetheart to that of one with attitude, and promoted Barbers to up their prices for one of the simplest hairstyles in existence: the shaved head.

Hiding the ‘new do’ under a woolly hat during a Manchester United training session, David caused a media panic after a team-mate jokingly removed it revealing it to the World, causing newspapers to displace headlines just to cover it.

Next up in the collection is the possibly the one Golden Ball’s will look back on and think ‘Maybe that wasn’t a good idea.’ Yep, you’ve guess it, the mini-Mohawk.

This monstrosity of a haircut was devised shortly after David’s shaved look grew back, and prompted armies of men to copy it, creating possibly the largest fashion disaster in the history of the World.

After the success and shock factor of the mini-Mohawk, David toned it down a little and went for something less shocking with this short, darker spiked haircut.

Next up for Mr. Beckham in the Summer of 2002 was my personal favourite, the blonde, longer Mohawk. Heck, I enjoyed it so much, even I sported it for a while!

Looking much like a blonde shark, Beck’s led England to the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup Final’s, narrowly losing to the eventual winners Brazil.

After the disappointment of the World Cup, David decided to go for the European look, and grew his hair much longer, often sporting it with a continental hair band, making an item normally seen in Fame (I want to Live Forever) fashionable once again.

Blatantly annoyed with his hair always being in his eyes, Beck’s decided to cause mass media frenzy once again with a style most often seen in the Caribbean. Enter the famous cornrow hairstyle, so famous in fact that Nelson Mandela requested to meet Beck’s and the England squad during this period.
Was this influenced by this famous hairstyle? Who knows!

Paul Smith Socks vs Duchamp Socks – The Battle of the Socks

KJ Beckett have picked two of the leading British men’s fashion accessory designers; Paul Smith and Duchamp; and compared their men’s sock collections, putting them head-to-head in the ultimate men’s sock review of 2007! Which sock was the softest? Which sock was the most comfortable? Who had the best designs? Read on to find out…

Paul Smith Socks

Made in Italy and generally of mercerised cotton (although some pairs are high percentage wool), there’s no surprises that Paul Smith’s current sock collection is an impressive sight to all but the hardest of fashion connoisseurs. To ensure quality, Paul Smith opts for a high mix of cotton in his 2007 collection, with percentages reaching up to 100% but generally 80% mercerised cotton, mixed with polyamide.

Designs for this season include “Concertina” stripes, “Checker board”, Contrast heel and toe, dot socks, plus, our current favourite, Pencil flower socks. Of course the signature Paul Smith striped sock design is not forgotten also. As KJ Beckett have found with most designer socks, care should be taken in washing Paul Smith socks because we have noted shape is not fully retained when washed at “normal” temperatures. KJ Beckett recommend a low temperature was to keep your Paul Smith socks looking great wash after wash.

So Paul Smith socks are great, there's no argument there, but does Paul Smith win the “Battle of the Socks” in 2007?

Duchamp Socks

Well the answer is no! For us there was only going to be one winner between Paul Smith and Duchamp in 2007. As soon as we saw the eye-boggling socks collection at Duchamp we knew we were in sock heaven…a psychedelic sock heaven to be exact!

General

Skip shaving days when possible. This gives your skin a chance to rest.

Alternate between a razor and electric shaver.

Look for shaving products that are formulated to help make beard hair softer and finer. This makes it easier to cut through the hair when you shave.

Pre-shave

Apply moistorising lotion several minutes prior to shaving.

Shave

Use a fresh razor blade thus allowing you to apply minimal pressure.

Reduce friction on the skin by using a rich lather.

Avoid foams that are high in surfactants (lathering agents).

Post-shave

Choose low-alcohol or “buffered” alcohol shaving products containing:
- anti-irritants;
- barrier restoratives;
- antioxidants
- aloe (to soothe minor nicks and cuts).

Wait a few minutes before splashing on fragrance.

Shoe shine, sir? How to polish leather shoes.

The MFB guide to polishing your shoes to the same level of the armed forces!

Wipe any dust off your shoes using a damp cloth which has been run under warm water.
Take a soft cotton cloth or a fine, tightly packed bristle brush and apply a conservative amount of high quality polish to your shoe in a small circular movement; wrapping the cotton cloth around your finger, or evenly cover shoe with polish using the natural bristle brush.
Leave the polish on the shoe for 2 to 3 minutes. This will help the shoe’s leather absorb the polish.
Using a sprayer filled with water, spray a fine mist over the entire shoe until it is covered with tiny droplets of water. Then polish the shoe dry with the same bristle brush.
It is important to build up the polish in fine layers, therefore repeat process 2 to 4 until you reach desired level of shine.
Always keep the polish damp or it will dry out and not take to the shoe.
Once finished wipe the shoe with a cotton ball soaked in cold water, or lightly buff with a cotton cloth.
Leave shoes in a cold environment. Best to place them in a shoe box with lid.

The group, who are proposing the borough of Manhattan to formally recognise a new neighbourhood, are supported by a whole host of stars from the world of music and movies including Kiefer Sutherland, Lily Allen, Stephen Dorff, Joss Stone, Bryan Adams and many more…

Men’s guide to bad breath – the causes and cures.

For most men fashion and confidence go hand-in-hand! Your image and the way you present yourself are important to you! Being well groomed, clean shaven and wearing stylish and interesting clothing is paramount. Likewise most fashion conscious men want to avoid bad breath (or halitosis)…as a consequence MFB have listed a few facts to help you…

Causes of bad breath

A man’s breath will ultimately depend on a number of different things, and the main “bad breath” variables are:

Oral anaerobic bacteria – or more specifically the waste products of oral bacteria. Generally the bacteria lives on the surface of your tongue, especially the back of your tongue.
Food – The most obvious foods are garlic, cabbage and onions (which contain high amounts of sulfur compounds). However high protein foods (such as meat and fish) are especially problematic because the waste from bacteria that causes bad breath is created from the anaerobic bacteria as they digest proteins.
Smoking – “Smoker's breath”; need we say more?
Having a dry mouth – When you have a dry mouth bacteria become more concentrated in the saliva, and they tend to evaporate more readily into the air. This releases the bad odours (from the bacteria) into your breath!

Preventing/curing bad breath

The main actions you can take to get rid of bad breath are:

Brush and floss your teeth

Brushing and flossing are crucial elements for dealing with bad breath. Brushing and flossing remove bacteria and the food that bacteria feasts on so that they can no longer create volatile sulfur compounds VSC). Ensure you brush for long enough! It takes 2-3 minutes to brush all tooth surfaces. If you spend less than this brushing your teeth you are not doing it properly.

Clean your tongue

Regular cleaning of your tongue can be the single most beneficial treatment men can undertake to prevent bad breath! In particular it is the back (posterior) portion of your tongue, which holds the most bacteria, that is the most important area to clean. There are a number of ways to clean your tongue:

Using a toothbrush: From as far back as possible, make brush strokes outward, toward the front of your tongue, applying some pressure.
Using a tongue scraper: Some people find scraping their tongue with a tongue scraper is more effective and you will be less likely to gag. Practice tongue scraping by using a spoon and if this is successful, you may wish to purchase a specific tongue scraper.

Use a mouthwash

Mouthwash will NOT be an effective cure for bad breath on its own. However when in used in conjunction with the above advice it will certainly help! In particular look for mouthwashes that kill bacteria (antibacterial mouthwashes) or mouthwashes that neutralize volatile sulfur compounds. Chlorine dioxide mouthwashes are particularly recommended!

Other tips to reduce bad breath…

Drink plenty of water - Drinking water throughout the day can help to control bad breath.
Stimulate your mouth's flow of saliva – by chewing gum! Chewing helps cleanse the teeth and stimulates the flow of saliva which helps dissolve odorous volatile sulfur compounds. However be sure to choose sugarless gum.
Drink green tea - Green teas contain polyphenols, which are antioxidants that protect human cells from damage and help fight bacteria by inhibiting their growth. By killing the bacteria that gives off a bad smell, you can reduce bad breath.
Clean your mouth well and regularly - especially after eating foods high in protein content. Try to clean your mouth out as soon as possible after eating to remove the protein that oral bacteria thrive on!

MFB have listed some of the most common mistakes men commit when shaving. Avoid these blunders at all costs to ensure a clean, close, cut free shave.

Shaving too fast

Take your time! If you shave at speed you will make mistakes and most likely cut yourself. Carefully control the razor across your skin. Give yourself a couple of extra minutes to shave… it will be worth it.

Using normal soap as shaving cream

Normal soap will dry the skin and doesn't soften the hairs on your face. This makes for a more difficult shave. Always opt for a shaving gel, cream or specialist shaving soap.

Shaving before a shower

Most men that do this think that they can clean their face (in the shower) after a shave and thus save time. However these men don’t benefit from the advantages a couple of minutes of pre-shave hot water exposure can give you. Indeed the shower’s steam softens the hair on your face making for an easier shave. Furthermore the heat opens and unclogs pours to clear away impurities. Plus an opened pore is much easier to shave!

Not cleaning the pre-shave face

Again, most men think they should clean their face after the shave. However by cleaning away dirt and grease before a shave, you remove a layer or barrier that would otherwise lie between your skin and the razor. Removing this unwanted layer on your skin gives a much closer shave. If you want to save some time, one tip is to clean your face whilst in the shower before you shave.

Removing Scuffs from Leather Shoes

It is possible to remove light scuffs on leather shoes by applying a coat of shoe polish. However dark scuffs, especially on lighter coloured shoes requires refinishing. MFB recommends you take your shoes to a shoe repair shop although it is possible to repair your shoes yourself as detailed below.

Obtain a refinishing spray at a shoe repair shop. Remember to take your shoes with you so that you can match them to a colour chart.
Cover the shoe so that only the leather upper is exposed. Mask off the sole and heel of the shoes using masking tape.
Use a light-coloured shoe cleaning cloth and leather preparer to wash the leather. Let the shoes dry. If necessary repeat the process until the leather has a dull, even finish. Note – work within a well-ventilated area.
Apply shoe refinishing spray evenly and lightly across the leather. Allow to dry. Repeat the application of refinishing spray until the leather has an even colour.
Remove the masking tape. Polish the shoes with cream polish and a clean, soft cloth.

In some cases toothpaste can be used to remove scuffs from shoes. Simply squirt a very small amount on the scuffed area of the shoe and rub with a clean, soft cloth. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Warning: MFB recommend you test a small area of your show to text colour fastness of the leather before using toothpaste on fine shoes.

As well as looking the part for work, a night out on the town with the boys, or a date with that special someone, you’re also going to need to be smelling the part, but let’s be honest, if that involves placing Old Spice or Brut anywhere near your body, then you might be in need of a new scent.

So what’s important when choosing that new cologne?

Well, firstly, you need to know that a scent is an extension of yourself, with every scent smelling different on different people what with how the cologne takes to your body. While your mate Clive smells charming in the new Paul Smith fragrance, you have to understand that you may end up smelling like a pair of old socks.

Selecting that scent?

The best bet to get an idea of how a fragrance smells on you is to go to a Department Store (such as Selfridges, Harrods, House of Frasier) and make a beeline for their fragrance department.

Once you’re there, resist all temptation to cover yourself in as many scents as possible, as this will cloud your judgement, as well as make you pass out.
Instead, take along several pieces of card, and spray each one with the different cologne.

Men's Face Cleansing

Because of the size of men’s pores, your skin needs to be cleaned both in the morning and at night. Cleansing your face in the evening removes the dirt and grime from a hard day, and cleansing in the morning removes toxins that have been released from your skin overnight! Below is a 5-step process to cleansing your face:

1. Wash your hands with soap. Don’t apply a face cleanser with dirty hands.
2. Moisten a clean facecloth in warm (not hot) water. Wipe the cloth over your face to remove the surface oil, dirt and grime, and also moisten the skin.
3. With moist hands, put some cleanser on the tips of your fingers and create a foam.
4. Using both hands, swirl your cleanser on your face in small circular motions, with on your neck, cheeks, nose, and forehead.
5. Moisten a new facecloth with lukewarm water and rinse off all the cleanser.

Step 1: Cleanse

Compared to women, men have oilier skin and larger pores. This makes men’s skin dirtier quicker, making it necessary to cleanse regularly. Twice daily cleansing (morning and night) is key to keeping your pores clean and clear. This is especially true for men who live or work in a major city.Use gentle, but effective, cleansing products. Cleansers are available to buy in a myriad of forms, such as: foaming gels, creams, milky cleansers and ready-to-go cleansing pads.

MFB recommend you avoid using deodorant bar soaps on your face, which are harsh; striping and irritating your skin.

Step 2: Tone Your Skin

Toner should be applied between cleansing and moisturising. A skin toner will clean and diminish the look of large pores. It will also help tighten your face, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Furthermore it will restore your skin's pH balance.

Step 3: Exfoliate

Men have hair over their face, and hair traps oil, dirt and grime. Exfoliating helps to remove dirt, dead skin and smooth the surface of the skin. Use a scrub, exfoliating gloves, abrasive sponge, or loofa to exfoliate.

Daily exfoliation may not be needed, but a regular exfoliation to clean up the dead skin cells is certainly essential. Try to exfoliate at least 2 to 3 times per week for adequate coverage.

Take care when exfoliating as it can dry out skin. Use a moisturiser to help stabilise your skin and feed the new skin.

Step 4: Moisturise Your Skin

Moisturising is the most important part to men's daily skin care routine, especially due to increased risk of dry skin from shaving. A good moisturiser will restore the skin's lost moisture and prevent the moisture from evaporating further.

It is important to select a moisturiser suitable for your skin type. For instance, if you have combination or dry skin, use a non-greasy oil-free moisturiser. MFB also recommends you buy a moisturiser that contains SPF 15 or higher to prevent your skin being damaged by the suns harmful rays.

To reduce under eye wrinkles, puffiness or lines, use a separate eye gel treatment for men. The same applies for your lips. Try a soothing balm or an anti-chapping stick. Again try to buy one with SPF 15 or above.
